Summer is winding down and training camp is approaching. All has been quiet for the Charlotte Hornets and pretty much all of the NBA for the last couple of months. It’s time to start ramping back up, and the Hornets got that started with a series of roster moves.
To summarize:
- DaQuan Jeffries is out
- Marcus Garrett is in
- Keyontae Johnson and Brandon Slater passed through in between
No surprises or real new names here. Jeffries was a pretty regular contributor to the Hornets last season, but all of the offseason additions have created a roster crunch that Jeffries was never going to survive. Marcus Garrett will occupy a spot for right now, but he probably isn’t long for this roster either.
Johnson and Slater each spent about 24 hours under contract before being waived. I can only assume that those moves were technicalities to sign the guys on Exhibit 10 deals. Those contracts give the players a bonus if they sign with a team’s G League affiliate, in this case the Greensboro Swarm. Johnson was on the Swarm last season and Slater spent time with the Hornets in the summer league in 2024.
At the end of the day, all of Garrett, Johnson, and Slater are all likely to end up with the Swarm while Jeffries will have to try to find himself a new team, though openings are slim this time of year.
