Charlotte Hornets make series of moves official

Over the last several days, the Charlotte Hornets have “reportedly” made a number of moves. Because of the moratorium on most transactions, all of their moves, as well as most of the moves made around the league, haven’t been made official. The moratorium ended at noon on Monday, so teams could start officially completing the transactions and announcing them. The Hornets did that with most of their transactions.

So as it stands right now, officially, the Hornets have:

  • Re-signed Coby White to a three year, $74 million deal
  • Signed Kylan Boswell and Michael Ajayi to two-way contracts (Antonio Reeves and Tosan Evbuomwan are out; PJ Hall is still here)
  • Traded for Dorian Finney-Smith and three second round picks

First, we got a few more specifics on the Dorian Finney-Smith trade. The Hornets are absorbing him into their midlevel exception. Since both teams have to send something in every trade, the Hornets are sending cash to the Rockets, according to Rod Boone of the Charlotte Observer. I assume it’s a nominal amount that’s the minimum for such a trade to go through. Also according to Boone, it doesn’t seem as though there are plans for Finney-Smith to actually play in Charlotte, so he’s seemingly going to be on the move later.

Noticeably absent from the announced series of transactions are the big moves that have taken the majority of Hornets-related headlines over the past couple of weeks. The team has yet to formally announce the trades of LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges, which means there are still things potentially happening behind the scenes with those trades. That doesn’t mean the trades won’t go through. They’re all but done. However, teams will often consolidate multiple trades into one large transaction to make salary matching cleaner and pull off other book-balancing tricks. So those trades are still happening, but it seems as though there could be more to come before those trades are made official.

The Hornets are still sitting on a large trade exception they’ll get when the LaMelo Ball trade goes through, assuming it goes through as reported. They’ll also be sitting with 16 players under contract, which means something is going to have to happen to consolidate roster spots. The offseason isn’t done just yet.
