Summarizing Charlotte Hornets player interviews at media day

Yesterday, we summarized the press conferences of Charles Lee and Jeff Peterson. Today, we go through a few of the players. Everyone got their turn to speak to the media, but a lot of them are short with a lot of generic boilerplate stuff. If you have anyone in particular you want to watch, the Hornets’ site has every one of them. If you just want to read a few highlights from the most notable players. I got you.

Kon Knueppel

  • He pulled his hamstring going coast to coast after a rebound. Rehab has been going well. The pain has pretty much subsided and now it’s just about getting the strength back.
  • The team has done a lot of bonding over the summer between player led workouts, a golf outing etc. Kon is close with a lot of guys on the team.
  • He wants to play in every game so he’s going to do whatever he can to be ready for opening night.
  • He called the NBA season a grind and he feels more prepared to deal with it going into year two. The injury gives him a chance to essentially practice going through a rehab process.
  • He’s put a lot of time this offseason into finishing at the basket, secondary play making, ball handling, and off hand finishing.
  • Both he and the team want him to take on an expanded role as a play maker and offense initiator.
  • He enjoyed about a month up north for some time to hang with friends and feed his mind and soul and all that stuff.
  • He hasn’t had a chance to play with Naz Reid much because Reid was away having a baby and then Kon pulled his hamstring around the time Reid came back, but he likes Reid the human and is excited to play with him.
  • A big part of this season is managing expectations because he expects their to be more than in the past.
  • His weight is about the same as it was last season but he’s been lifting a lot of weights in the offseason.
  • He actually hurt his hamstring about three weeks ago.

Brandon Miller

  • He talked about making sure he stayed engaged with teammates during his shoulder rehab but he’s back now.
  • He’s been lifting all summer even with the injured shoulder and has been doing full contact basketball for about three weeks. He’s not worried about any mental hurdles when getting back onto the floor.
  • He considers the injuries part of the game and just focuses on getting better regardless of the circumstances.
  • Jeff Peterson and Charles Lee won’t talk about expectations, but Miller says the goal is to make the playoffs.
  • He watched a lot of film over the summer and looked at his numbers and thought his shooting percentage around the rim was too low, so he’s worked on ways to improve on that for next season both on the court and with things like his eating habits and things off the court to help his conditioning.
  • He’s known Naz Reid for a little bit and knows what he’s capable of and expects him to help the team get better.
  • He dealt with a lot of discomfort last season with his shoulder not staying in place all the time. He thinks the strength he’s added during the rehab process is going to help be a lot better next season.
  • He thinks the team was more consistent than most at being in the gym all summer and building bonds with one another.
  • He weighs 210 right now and played at 202-205 last season.
  • He really appreciates the fans and wants them to bring the energy like they did for the play-in last year.

Coby White

  • In the past, he’s spent most of his summers in LA and came back to Chicago sometime in September. He spent this summer in Charlotte after re-signing, and it’s the first time he’s ever seen such a large portion of the roster so consistently in the facility during the offseason.
  • He knows he has different responsibilities this season but he knows he has to do it his way.
  • Called Naz Reid a very unique player and a mismatch problem. He’s looking forward to playing with such a versatile and talented group.
  • He’s excited for his new role and is confident he’s going to excel in it. He’s changed his process a little bit with the way he watches film and has spent a time with Lamar Skeeter.
  • There’s no pride or selfishness in the Hornets’ current group and they all share a common goal of winning. The team chemistry is great and is very important to the team’s success.
  • The starters that White is going to be playing with are going to make his job a lot easier.
  • He was asked about being the guy to have the ball in his hands in crunch. He said it’s something he’s comfortable with from his time in Chicago, and he learned a lot from DeMar DeRozan in those situations while they were teammates, but he also acknowledged that it’s going to be a collective effort with other guys on the team.

Naz Reid

  • It was Naz Reid’s first time talking in front of the Charlotte media. He’s enjoyed getting know everyone and seeing the differences from his time in Minnesota.
  • He’s excited to tap into parts of his game he hasn’t gotten to yet while also sharing his experience with the younger players.
  • He brings a relentlessness and is willing to do whatever is needed to help the team win. He thinks the fan base is going to be excited to watch him play.
  • He spoke a lot about growing as a player in this new situation.
  • When asked about Charles Lee, he said every time he steps into the gym, it’s all smiles. Lee has embraced Reid and both he and Jeff Peterson have made Reid feel comfortable here.
  • When asked what young guys have stood out, he said all of them, but then gave a special shoutout to Michael Ajayi.
  • He, like everyone else, spoke highly of the group’s versatility.
  • He wasn’t super super shocked about getting traded because it’s the nature of the NBA and he’s excited to be here and has felt embraced by the front office and organization.
