It is the eve of the eve of the 2023 NBA Draft, and all of the media pundits and prognosticators are finalizing their mock drafts and predictions (including Chase). Most of outlets had posted new mocks within hours or even minutes of me consolidating them, so these are hot off the presses.
The first two picks are going to be split between two players. We know this. This roundup is more to see who the Hornets might end up with later on.
ESPN
2: Brandon Miller, forward, Alabama
27: Leonard Miller, forward, G League Ignite
34: Trayce Jackson-Davis, big, Indiana
39: Jalen Wilson, forward, Kansas
41: Sidy Cissoko, wing, G League Ignite
ESPN has the Hornets going with back to back Millers that play the four spot in their mock. They also have them taking another forward in Wilson in the second round. Those second round picks are kinda throwaways, but that’s still a lot of redundancy.
The Ringer
2: Brandon Miller, forward, Alabama
27: Kris Murray, forward, Iowa
34: Maxwell Lewis, wing, Pepperdine
39: Marcus Sasser, guard, Houston
41: Rayan Rupert, wing, NZ Breakers (NBL)
Kevin O’Connor has the Hornets going with a more well balanced approach to the draft. They complement the star upside of Miller with some 3&D help from Murray and scoring pop from Lewis. Sasser and Rupert would add some defensive edge if they crack the roster.
The Athletic
2: Brandon Miller, forward, Alabama
27: Colby Jones, wing, Xavier
Joe Vardon makes a very uncompelling case for Miller at two, citing the Hornets larger need for a forward than a guard and saying he doesn’t even anticipate the Hornets making the selection at all. Jones is a nice role player piece that provides Cody Martin insurance.
Yahoo Sports
2: Scoot Henderson, guard, G League Ignite
27: Ben Sheppard, wing, Belmont
34: James Nnaji, big, Barcelona (Spain)
39: GG Jackson, forward, South Carolina
41: Keyontae Johnson, wing, Kasnsas State
My favorite mock so far. The Hornets get a full lineup here. Scoot creates a dynamo guard pairing with LaMelo Ball. Sheppard is a deadeye shooter, while Jackson and Nnaji are high upside swings in the second round. Keyontae Johnson is a great story and is a bowling ball with a smooth jumper.
CBS Sports
2: Brandon Miller, forward, Alabama
27: Nick Smith, guard, Arkansas
34: Kobe Brown, forward, Missouri
39: Tristan Vukčević, big, Partisan Belgrade
41: Julian Phillips, wing, Tennessee
The Hornets get some guard depth that isn’t Scoot by taking Nick Smith at the end of the first round, and that could be a tremendous pick if he reaches the potential he showed as a high school prospect. Phillips and Vukčević are more high end swings in the second round, while Brown is a more steady, NBA ready prospect.
USA Today
2: Scoot Henderson, guard, G League Ignite
27: Colby Jones, wing, Xavier
The Hornets get some pop with Scoot and some meat and potatoes with Jones.
Bleacher Report
2: Scoot Henderson, guard, G League Ignite
27: Colby Jones, wing, Xavier
34: Amari Bailey, guard, UCLA
39: Juilan Strawther, wing, Gonzaga
41: Keyontae Johnson, wing, Kansas State
People love mocking Colby Jones to the Hornets, and he’d be a very good fit. Bailey adds some guard depth along with Henderson, while Strawther and Johnson add some 3&D help on the wings, and the Hornets really need guys like that.
NBA Draft Net
2: Brandon Miller, forward, Alabama
27: Rayan Rupert, wing, NZ Breakers (NBL)
34: Julian Phillips, wing, Tennessee
39: Amari Bailey, guard, UCLA
41: Isaiah Wong, guard, Miami
NBA Draft Net has the Hornets filling out their guard and wing depth with a bunch of high upside picks before taking an accomplished ACC star in Wong to round out their picks.
Box and ONe
2: Scoot Henderson, guard, G League Ignite
27: Maxwell Lewis, wing, Pepperdine
The Hornets get Scoot’s supreme athleticism and slashing ability and then add some scoring and shooting with Lewis later in the first round.
Tankathon
2: Scoot Henderson, guard, G League Ignite
27: Rayan Rupert, wing, NZ Breakers (NBL)
34: Julian Phillips, wing, Tennessee
39: Ben Sheppard, wing, Belmont
41: Julian Strawther, wing, Gonzaga
You can never have too many wings, amirite? Tankathon has the Hornets going wing heavy after taking Scoot. Rupert and Phillips are the athletes with defensive tools. Sheppard and Strawther are the shooters. Surely someone from the bunch will pan out.
Which of these mocks is your favorite? Who do you want to see the Hornets take?
