Hornets tab Marlon Garnett as Summer League head coach

Today, Marlon Garnett was named the Summer League head coach of the Charlotte Hornets for the California Classic in Sacramento and NBA 2K24 Summer League in Las Vegas.

Garnett has been an assistant coach on the Hornets bench since he was hired by James Borrego in 2021. Previously, he worked under Lloyd Pierce in Atlanta and Earl Watson in Phoenix. Garnett was the Summer League head coach for the Suns in 2017.

The official Summer League roster hasn’t been announced yet, but we can brainstorm a list of players who should play in Sacramento and Vegas:

  • Guards: Bryce McGowens, Nick Smith Jr., Amari Bailey
  • Wings: Brandon Miller, Angelo Allegri, Leaky Black
  • Bigs: James Nnaji, Nathan Mensah

There’s not a rule as to how many players NBA teams can carry on a Summer League roster, but most bring 10-13 players with them. If our list is accurate, the Hornets have eight, though it hasn’t been confirmed whether Nnaji will play. JT Thor, Kai Jones and James Bouknight could go as well, but it’s semi-rare for third-year players to appear in Summer League. Théo Maledon, Xavier Sneed, even Scottie Lewis or other Greensboro Swarm alumni could also join the Summer League squad.

The Hornets begin the California Classic on July 3 with a matchup against San Antonio at 8:00 PM local time. With that in mind, the roster will likely be finalized and released to the public in the coming days. Charlotte’s first game in Vegas is on July 7 at 9:00 PM local time, also against the Spurs. The full schedule for the league can be found here and the Hornets schedule can be found here.
