According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, who’s been hot on the Charlotte Hornets head coaching search, the Hornets will be interviewing former Celtics assistant and current Clipper assistant Jay Larranaga for their head coaching vacancy.
Los Angeles Clippers assistant Jay Larranaga will interview for the Charlotte Hornets’ head coaching job, sources tell ESPN. Larranaga has spent three seasons on Ty Lue’s staff after nine years under Brad Stevens and Doc Rivers with the Boston Celtics.

This will actually be the second time that Larranaga will sit down in front of Hornets brass for an interview, though I don’t think any of the brass are the same this time around. He interviewed with the team back in 2018 but ultimately lost out on the job to James Borrego. He seems to get interviewed in just about every round of the head coaching carousel, but he hasn’t been able to close the deal.
Larranaga started his coaching career as an old school player/coach for the Ireland national team. He then served as the head coach of the D League’s Erie Bayhawks for two seasons before getting his first NBA gig with the Celtics in 2012. He worked their under Brad Stevens before departing when Stevens moved into the front office in 2021. He was quickly scooped up by the Clippers, where he’s been ever since.
