Hornets acquire 2nd round pick to waive Devonte’ Graham, waiving Davis Bertans

ESPN’s Adrian Wojanrowski is reporting that the Charlotte Hornets are acquiring Devonte’ Graham and a 2nd round pick from the Spurs. The Hornets will waive Graham.

In a follow-up Tweet, Woj notes that the Hornets will pay the $2.85 million guaranteed on the last year of Graham’s contract and then waive him.

There was a part of me that was excited for the first half of that Tweet. I’ve always been a huge fan of Graham as a player and a person, much to the dismay of a handful of people on Twitter back in the day. Unfortunately, Graham has never been able to recapture the magic that made him a should-have-been Most Improved Player in 2020. He’ll look to latch on somewhere else in free agency.

The Spurs have a lot of incoming 2nd round picks in the next few years. No word yet on which one the Hornets are getting.

In other news, the Hornets are waiving forward Davis Bertans. (One point for Woj, one point for Shams)

This move was inevitable given the other offseason moves the Hornets have been making. They’ve been operating as a team under the cap, which is only possible without the fully guaranteed $16 million counting against them. The Hornets will only be on the hook for $5.25 million, so they’ll free up $10.75 million with Bertans’ release.

Bertans played well after he was acquired by the Hornets at the trade deadline back in February. The Hornets would potentially have a use for him as a 3-point specialist off the bench, but it’s hard to justify paying him $16 million to do that. Bertans will move on try to latch on for another year or two as he approaches his mid 30s.
