The Hornets didn’t specify that Miller would be undergoing surgery when they originally announced the injury a few days ago, but it’s been a pretty safe assumption that surgery was the next step. So much so that I originally wrote that he’d be undergoing surgery before I realized the team had never actually said that. Well now it’s official.
Unfortunately the injury is to his right wrist, so his recovery and rehab is going to be vital to returning to his current level of play. Other notable players like Jaylen Brown, Khris Middleton, and Bradley Beal have had the same surgery on the same ligament in their wrist, but all of them sustained the injury on their left side. That means we have no recent comparison that I’m aware of that we can use to see how this might affect shooting.
Miller’s sophomore season ends with 21.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. His counting stats improved across the board compared to his rookie season, but we saw a dip in his shooting percentage both from the field and from three.
There are about eight months until the start of training camp, which is right around the time these injuries take to heal, though it might be a bit longer with the injury coming to his dominant wrist. Hopefully with good surgery and very diligent and consistent rehab, he’ll be able to get back to action without much loss of strength or mobility. We’ll really need that to keep the same Brandon Miller we’ve seen in his first two seasons.
