NBA Draft Lottery day primer and conversation

Tonight is one of the biggest nights on the calendar for terrible teams like the Charlotte Hornets. It can change the entire direction of the franchise. And it’ll all be over in about 10 minutes.

The lottery starts at 7:00pm Eastern time, but that’s just the beginning of all of the pre-drawing fodder. ESPN will introduce representatives and do their ESPNing with stories and bad analysis. The ping pong ball drawing that determines the draft order will have already happened, but no one outside of the drawing room will know those results yet. The actual announcement of the picks will probably start somewhere around 7:15, maybe 7:20. If it’s like previous years, they’ll announce picks 5 through 14 in reverse order and then take a commercial break before announcing the top four picks.

The Hornets have a 14% chance of landing the top overall pick and a 52.1% chance of landing somewhere in the top four. It’s possible something great could happen, but it’s Charlotte sports. I wouldn’t get my hopes up.
