Hornets sign head coach Charles Lee to contract extension

On Thursday, the Charlotte Hornets announced that they had inked head coach Charles Lee to a contract extension.

General manager Jeff Peterson’s comments, from the linked press release:

“Charles has done an outstanding job establishing a foundation for who we want to be as a team,” said Peterson. “From day one, Charles and his staff have prioritized player development, creating an environment where each of our players are committed to getting better and continue to improve. He has built a team-first culture rooted in accountability, hard work and professionalism. I’m excited to keep working closely with Charles as we continue to build the Hornets for long-term success.”

There aren’t any details on the nature of the extension or the original contract it’s extending, as is typically the case for coaches. But the decision to lock Lee up and keep him around is probably about as easy as a decision can be. After an injury ravaged calamity of a first season, Lee turned the Hornets around about as dramatically as you’ll ever see in the NBA. He had a Hornets team that’s been irrelevant for the better part of a decade playing as one of if not the best team in the league for the entire second half of the season. All of the young players have shown significant growth, and the team is clearly bought in to what he’s selling.

Lee will try to continue his team’s ascent and take them into the land of competitiveness. There will be more continuity in this group than we’ve seen in a while, and it’s very exciting to see what that turns into.
