Hey how about we play a basketball game. The Hornets were in the news for all the wrong reasons yesterday. They waived Kai Jones in the wake of his odd behavior and trade demand, then reports surfaced about a criminal summons issued for Miles Bridges. It’s so cool and fun being a Hornets fan.
At least we have preseason basketball that we can talk about instead. Fresh off technically losing to Cole Swider and the Miami Heat, the Hornets travel to Washington to take on another division rival for preseason game two. The veterans will try to build off a strong opener where they mostly outplayed the Heat starters. The bench will need to be better, as they struggled throughout the night, and the deeper reserves threw the game away in the final few minutes. Brandon Miller had a solid but unspectacular debut. It’d be nice to see him put a good performance out there to get the people excited.
The Wizards won their preseason opener by 63 points. It was against the Cairns Taipans. They play in Australia’s NBL and interestingly are a not-for-profit professional sports team. Didn’t know those existed, and I kinda like the idea of scheduling a team like that to get the confidence up after the first preseason game. They are pretty good in the NBL though.
Kyle Kuzma and Jordan Poole started their star campaigns with 22 and 18 points respectively. Corey Kispert and Johnny Davis had good games off the bench. Really just about everyone played well, which isn’t surprising given the gulf in class. The Hornets will hopefully put up more of a test.
The injury report should be the same as the first game. Cody Martin and James Bouknight are still out. The one exception might be Bryce McGowens, who was a game time scratch for game one. He might be available to make his preseason debut tonight.
