Hornets vs Clippers postponed due to wildfires

The Charlotte Hornets vs the Los Angeles Clippers that was originally scheduled for tonight (Saturday January 11th), has been postponed.

Obviously the health and safety of those in the greater Los Angeles take precedence over a basketball game, so good job by the league to postpone the game to a later date. No word when that date will be.

The Hornets have now had two Los Angeles games postponed, and there isn’t a clear place to insert makeup games. The schedule gets really tight after January with their only being a couple of instances in which the Hornets have more than one day off between games in which a makeup game could be played. I don’t think either align with any stretch of days off for the Lakers or Clippers. So the NBA has three options:

  1. Play the games at the end of the season
  2. Don’t play the games at all
  3. Make somebody play a back-to-back-to-back

I don’t think any of those options are particularly appealing. The Hornets aren’t competing for anything, which would make a cancelation possible, but both the Lakers and Clippers are competing for playoff seeding. I don’t know if there’s precedent for this, but the league might tack these games on at the end of the season but outright cancel them if they end up not having any effect on playoff seeding. We will see.

The Hornets next play at the Suns on Sunday night. They’ll try to make it two wins in as many games against the Suns.
