As is customary on the first night of the NBA Draft, Charlotte Hornets general manager Jeff Peterson spoke with the media, as did the two draft picks, Hannes Steinbach and Christian Anderson. We’ll hit the bullet points of what was said so you don’t have to sit and watch the whole videos if you don’t want to.
Jeff Peterson
- He called Hannes Steinbach the best rebounder in the draft and Christian Anderson one of the best shooters and one of the best pick and roll players in the draft, so he’s excited to have both (obviously)
- Steinbach gives the Hornets a different look from Moussa Diabate and Ryan Kalkbrenner since he has more offensive versatility
- The fact that Steinbach and Anderson were teammates on the German youth national team wasn’t considered when selecting the players but is a nice bonus after getting both
- Peterson wouldn’t say whether or not he expects the rookies to contribute immediately or if they’ll need time to develop first. He’s always been consistent about not putting expectations or ceilings on players in these settings.
- There were plenty of opportunities to trade the picks but ultimately decided to stand pat and make the picks
- Getting Coby White back in Charlotte is the priority this offseason. Peterson facetimed with him the other day and has been making that clear to White.
- The combine is one of Peterson’s favorite time of the year because he gets the chance to get to know the players he’s been scouting. They tend to use those times to get to know the humans more than they talk about basketball.
Hannes Steinbach
Editor’s note: Steinbach talks quickly and directly with short answers. Very German.
- Really enjoyed his interviews with Charlotte and is really excited to get to work (same as the start of every interview)
- Was asked about Anderson and called him a very good point guard. He’s very excited to play with his German teammate.
- Brings rebounding as his best attribute and has been working on his shooting so he can help space the floor
- Thinks his experience in Germany has helped prepare him for the NBA given he was playing against bigger and more physically mature players
- His dad, who played professionally in Germany brought him into basketball, while Dirk Nowitzki was a motivator in terms of making it to the NBA
- His dad was a strong player that was also a very good rebounder
- Thinks his shooting and passing are better than he showed at Washington because of the role he was required to play
Christian Anderson
- (Obviously) says he’s super excited to join the organization. Has spent time in the Carolinas throughout his life and is excited to be not too far from home and with his German teammate.
- Says his time at Texas Tech exposed him to hostile environments, which will help him translate to the NBA. Prides himself on being a plug and play player that brings both shooting/scoring and play making.
- Didn’t know what to expect on draft night but was really impressed and comfortable with the people he met from the organization
- Scouting report on Hannes: gifted rebounder with a super good feel for the game. Very cerebreal player that’s very strong. Called him a bull that plays with a chip on shoulder.
- The interview with the Hornets was his favorite interview at the combine
- Says Kon Knueppel should have won Rookie of the Year. That’s how you ingratiate yourself to Hornets fans. Plans to learn a lot from Kon.
