The Charlotte Hornets have added some guard depth by selecting KJ Simpson out of the University of Colorado.
Simpson is known as a scoring guard, but he has a very complete game. He averaged 19.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game while shooting over 43% from three on good volume. He can create his own shot both on the perimeter and by attacking the basket. He has a quick release and can knock down jumpers from deep both off the catch and off the dribble. He’s on the smaller side, but he works hard on defense and brings an element of toughness to the floor.
Simpson provides guard depth and dynamism to the Hornets bench that could use an injection of younger scoring and guard talent. His toughness and energy are a good complement to first round pick Tidjane Salaun as the new front office and coaching staff try to build the team in their image.
We’ll get our first look at Simpson in the purple and teal next week when the Hornets get started with the Summer League.
We’ll have a more detailed breakdown on his strengths and weaknesses and what he brings to the Hornets in the next couple of days.
Some highlights to whet the palate.
